Men and women helping one another communicate

There are ways that women and men can help each other negotiate more effectively. They can recognize and acknowledge what is important to the other.

A woman can acknowledge the real efforts a man is making, even if she doesn't agree with them or accept their outcomes. Words like, "I appreciate that you worked really hard" help the man hear that the woman is interested in solving the problem, not in finding fault with him.

A man can acknowledge a woman's feelings about a problem before trying to move on to problem-solving. It is important for men to understand that a woman may be experiencing more than one feeling or emotion, and these will very likely all need to be recognized and validated as they both proceed towards resolving their differences.
